# Two-Factor Authentication

Add a second verification step to your account, using an authentication app or SMS.

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second check when you sign in, so a stolen password alone is not enough to reach your account. You provide two things: a password (something you know) and a second factor, such as a one-time passcode sent to your phone (something you have).

We recommend enabling 2FA on every Advertiser and Publisher account.

## Before You Begin

* To use an authentication app, install one on your phone first.
* To use SMS, have your phone with you and know your country's dialing prefix.

## Enabling 2FA <a href="#a-step-by-step-guide-of-how-to-enable-2fa-within-the-platform" id="a-step-by-step-guide-of-how-to-enable-2fa-within-the-platform"></a>

1. Click your username in the top right of the screen, then select your username from the menu to open your profile.

2. Scroll to the **Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)** section at the bottom of the page and choose a method:
   * **Authentication App**
   * **SMS Authentication**

### Setting Up 2FA with an Authentication App <a href="#setting-up-2fa-via-the-authentication-app" id="setting-up-2fa-via-the-authentication-app"></a>

1. Click **Enable** for **Authentication App**, then follow the on-screen instructions.

<figure><img src="https://4095468742-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FQpBCwTiJQ0YOSGpcC0AH%2Fuploads%2FD9c6bLqYGZyotFgh31AP%2Fenable2fa.png?alt=media&amp;token=630ce9d6-c353-411b-a124-17e4adff7169" alt="The Authentication App setup screen with a QR Code option"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="info" %}
You can use any authentication app.
{% endhint %}

2. Once you enter the code, the 2FA method shows as **Enabled**:

### Setting Up 2FA with SMS <a href="#setting-up-2fa-via-sms-authentication" id="setting-up-2fa-via-sms-authentication"></a>

1. Click **Enable** for **SMS Authentication**, then enter your mobile phone number, including the dialing prefix for your country.

## 2FA with Multiple Users <a href="#how-to-use-2fa-with-multiple-users-on-your-account" id="how-to-use-2fa-with-multiple-users-on-your-account"></a>

If several people need to sign in to the same account, we recommend the **Authentication App** method. Each user can then access the account with a temporary token.

{% hint style="info" %}
You can have both 2FA methods enabled in your account. However, only one of them is requested at each login. Choose which one with the **Set as primary authentication method** checkbox or the **Set as Default** link.
{% endhint %}

From now on, each login asks for your password and a token — the code from your authentication app, or the one sent to you by SMS.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.exads.com/general/two-factor-authentication.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
